Yet, in my eyes, everything German has always been so perfect that I personally would have overlooked even their yelling at me, especially if it is from a young fraulein :) You have a great opportunity to be immersed in the German culture, and I envy you.
And yes you should try out surfing some time... wind, wave or paddle, surfing is just so fun I wish I had the chance to learn them all in college.
