Just writing about the Bohemian neighborhood of Fremont will probably be another project in itself, but summarizing my recent dinner in this decent neighborhood gem is as straightforward as ordering the meal ... a classy 3 course French Bistro at bargain price, snap!
I was not even hungry because prior to this casual evening with a college buddie we had spent hours sipping coffee and brainstorming cyberspace ideas at a bakery/pastries place nearby - the Flying Apron. Nonetheless, the friendly attitude and unpretentious introduction of the menu by this youthful, cheerful & very pretty waitress has been, eh, appetizing enough that I could pick out the trio combo of roasted squash soup, pork belly, and bread pudding without hesitation.
The French has mastered the art of turning plain ingredients into ambrosia. The roasted squash was one such example. Sage, squash, cream and bacon -- couldn't be simple enough but the genius was in mixing the mellow with the crispy, and then serving it at the right temperature for your taste bud. This chef, and I should say this paricular waitress too, have served it just right. I was also pleasantly surprised by the artful manner with which the pork belly had been prepared and presented. Bread pudding was so-so, but I must keep in mind that my receptors for dessert had already been pre-loaded by countless scones, tarts and blondies earlier in the day.
In short, this restuarant is highly recommended. Whether your pensive mood will appreciate the disgustingly cheerful style of the waitress is a different matter. For an affordable price, the self-indulging needs of your taste buds will surely be fulfilled.
