Global Chinese Community

四 海 一 家

See Google's announcement.

Unless Microsoft and Yahoo follow, I will switch everything away from Yahoo and Bing and become a 100% Google user.

I hope that the rest of Silicon Valley companies will put their money where their mouth is, and stand with Google.

No doubt many people, who are eager to prove their sophistication, would suggest that Google is doing this for business, and not moral, reasons. "They are losing in China, and are pulling out under the pretense of high principles" Yada, yada.

Do not listen to those cynics. They don't know what they are talking about.

Google is paying a high price if indeed it pulls out of the huge and lucrative Chinese market, where it has 24% market share.

Sad to hear Bing May lose its charm to smart and ethical customers, but I must say that such a glorious name, as Bing, will be forever disgraced, unless Microsoft follows Google's admirable lead. For all entities worthy of the great name, Bing -- be they individuals, non-profits or profit-seeking businesses, only one business decision is acceptable: investment should never be made in areas where the rights and lives of fellow human beings are being systematically harmed. The PRC is an illustrative example of such an area geographically and politically, and internet filtering/surveillence even more egregious case of technology being abused and misused by governments. Common people and professionals with conscience have succeeded against the tobacco industry before, and we should now rally behind Google, and put pressure on the rest of the high tech industry to follow the right path: might for rights, rights for rights, justice for all.

As far as cynics go, they will always be there and I couldn't care less whether they are right about this one single moment in history. The record of the ascent of man, in my reckon, was never made by conforming academics, green eye merchants or couch philosophers. It has always been the rebels, the loners and the street fighters, who elevate humanity to a higher level. I do hope Google decision makers of this moment will be remembered as such.
