Candlelight Vigil for the Tiananmen Massacre of June 4, 1989

Twenty years ago yesterday, citizens of Beijing told their soldiers: "The Peoples Army should not attack the People". A wall built by their bodies temporarily held the military back. Like these citizens of Beijing, overseas Chinese like us have embraced a glimmer of hope for a democratic future for China. (For a day by day recount of events leading up to the tragic day 20 years ago, you can go to our website: http://8964-tiananmen.com/page/3/ )

How would you remember Tiananmen Massacre, almost 20 years after that tragedy? Come join us for a memorial on June 4, Thursday, at Harvard University. The event will start at 7:30 pm at the Fong Auditorium in Boylston Hall. All are welcome. Boylston Hall is inside the Harvard Yard and near Mass Ave. Harvard Square exit. This event is organized by the Association of Overseas Hong Kong Chinese for Democracy and Human Rights, a group founded in Massachusetts in 1989. For inquiries, please call 617-628-6671.

May 4, 1919 will always be remembered as the date that inspired an era of enlightenment in modern Chinese history.

How will June 4, 1989 will remembered? The beginning of a prolonged dark age imposed by the so called Chinese Communist Party, or just the tip of an iceberg that will eventually wreck an authoritarian, one-party titanic?

How will June 4, 1989 be remembered, if it had not been for people like Mr. Szeto, his fellow Hong Kong citizens, and other overseas Chinese who refused to be silent on that massacre.

You were quoted by the Apple Daily recently. On behalf of our fellow volunteers, I thank you for your attendance and comments. I too feel that Mr. Szeto has inspired a younger generation to whom he and his generation will ultimately pass the torch.

Yes, ideals and dreams are so important to this generation. I am thrilled to hear that the student council of HK Univeristy has just passed overwhelmingly in favor of demanding Beijing to re-examine the 6/4 massacre. This is in stark contrast to the inappropriate comment made by their leader just a week ago, that the Tianamen students were shot because they were not rational!

Your brief comment will be read by tens of thousands in Hong Kong, I am sure. Because of young folks like you and our students of HK University, the torch will be carried on which clearly was Mr. Szeto's belief as well. Ideals will live, and dreams shall never die.

Love and thanks.
